Making Cushion Covers

To Your Own Design

Quick and easy for all occasions

These quick and easy cushion covers can be made on any machine with any yarn and any stitch pattern. Just make small tension square, instructions included in the pattern, and follow the simple instructions to calculate the stitches to cast on and the rows to knit.

The cushion covers in Book 206 are each made from just one piece of fabric - what could be easier? Designed to fit a 46cm (18" purchased cushion pad), the fabric is folded into an envelope style and the cushion pad is inserted - and removed - without any additional sewing. 

So versatile

This kind of cushion cover is fantastic for "high traffic" areas from girls' bedrooms (think make-up and fake tan!) to cushion pads for the workroom and comfortable cushions for scooters and wheelchairs. Their no-fuss design means that they can easily be removed for washing and, when the cushion has done its work, a replacement is quickly made.

Designs for the living room

Quick and easy also means keeping up with the fashions! Use your favourite punchcards to create patterned cushion covers that are in keeping with your decor - it's all about being able to match the colours and then to change the colours with the seasons.

Guides are given for making a ribbed cushion with a nautical colour theme and a summer meadow cushion which can be trimmed with knitted or purchased flowers to your own design (the pattern just gives the background colours) and, of course, fair isle and textured patterns can all be used. If you like creating textured patterns with hand tooling, why not choose classic cream and add cables?

Another option is to use the textured designs from Book 205, Making A Textured Scarf, for a modern look. More experienced knitters can easily add trims and fastenings to complete their own designs.

Fancy lace? Knit the basic cushion cover in your background cover, choose a fine, contrasting yarn and an open lace pattern, make a second small tension square but make the lace panel square if you prefer and slipstitch into place over the centre of the fabric.

If you already have books 72 and 73, you will have some ideas for trims and fastenings if you wish to add to the cushion covers. 

Adaptable

These cushion covers are not just for the living room - use them for dining chair pads, workroom chair or wheelchair cushion covers, too.

Just make a tension square and transfer the results into the boxes provided to give your knitting instructions. What an ideal way to use up your yarn!
